What is the Food and Cuisine Like?

Zambia has a variety of popular Chinese and Korean restaurants. For those who would like to try the local cuisine, there are some wonderful Zambian restaurants but there are a few points to take note of.

While on a tour or safari, your guide will take care of all your dining arrangements and also tell you where you can go, should you wish to try some of the other restaurants. While travelling on your own, please do the following; stay away from food that requires heating, avoid iced and raw produce, and make sure that the food you eat is well cooked and hot. Order all your meat well done. Avoid buying food or drink from street vendors.

In Zambia the primary dish is called nshima. It’s a maize type food which you dip into a sauce of meat or vegetables. There are some places in Zambia where you can try it out.

What can I buy when shopping in Zambia?

Within Lusaka there are thousands of stalls in the market place where you can buy an assortment of goods. From tools to clothing, food, car spares and so much more can be found at the various stalls. Major credit cards are accepted at the larger hotels, shops and restaurants. For groceries and general supplies it is best to go to the Manda Hill Shopping Mall.

Zambia has a wonderful variety of arts and craft which is available on the street markets in the various cities. From copper art to wooden masks and animals. Lusaka specifically is the best place to get curios.

The markets are a hive of activity; the thousands of stalls are filled and cleared every day. A myriad of motor spares dealers, restaurants, hairdressers, fishmongers, fruit sellers and rows and rows of "salaula" - discarded clothing from the West sold to Africa by the bale.

What is the entertainment and nightlife like?

One thing is for sure in Zambia and that is the major cities are not short of entertainment and groovy nightlife. From restaurants to coffee shops, fast food, cinemas, theatre, casinos, night clubs, pubs and other forms of entertainment, Zambia has it all. While it is not of the international standard, you can still enjoy yourself with good service and entertainment.
