If you take the time to visit Songwe Village at Victoria Falls for a Zambia vacation, time itself will take on a new meaning. The town of Livingstone itself, with its fascinating history, colorful markets and an interesting museum, can be a very worthwhile excursion.
Using this Zambia accommodation as your base from which to explore this exciting destination will enhance your experience of Victoria Falls. Livingstone, the local town on the Zambian side of the Falls, is not known as the adventure capital of Africa for nothing.
The Songwe experience can be anything you want it to be. You might simply choose to take a walk along the gorge and take in the incredible scenes, or pack a picnic lunch and watch the world go idly by from the banks of the Upper Zambezi.
From the camp, you go on a morning ox cart ride to the specially built museum, where you can learn about the extraordinary ancient history of the Falls and see evidence of human evolution in the form of stone tools and artifacts.
At nearby Mukuni Village, more recent history comes to life, as you stand under the tree where David Livingstone met the present chief's ancestors about 150 years ago. In this 700 year old village, little has changed down through the ages. At this Zambia lodging you will see traditional skills such as wood carving and grain pounding still being carried out.
Child Policy: Children between 8 - 12 years old are welcomed at full rate, all year round but must take a private vehicle.
Health: Please note that the whole of Northern Botswana and Victoria Falls are malaria areas. Please ensure that you consult physicians or a medical advisor prior to departure.
Weather: Approximately 450 mm (18 “) of rain falls annually. Summers are warm to hot while winters can be chilly to cold at night and in the early mornings. Winter days are mild. It is probably more accurate to speak of a wet and dry season as the most obvious seasonal variations relate to the general moisture balance.
However the cold (at night) months are from June to mid September – day temperatures can still be quite high even at this time. Open vehicles are used and the wind chill can make you very cold. Make sure that you bring a windbreaker and warm pants before coming to Zambia on holiday.
