Game viewing provides interesting surprises that had both guests and Busanga Bush Camp guides alike enthralled by the drama and beauty that unfolds each day in the Kafue National Park. Frequent sightings of African Finfoot, half-collared Kingfisher and Schallow's Lourie have birders reaching for their binoculars, while a few lucky ones are rewarded with the sighting of Pel's Fishing Owl, Bohm's Bee-eater and Lady Ross' Tourraco. A secluded island, surrounded by fast-flowing rapids (as well as a number of resident Hippo), can be used as an overnight camp. It provides an ideal setting to end a day's exciting paddle.
Cheetah are not seen as often on Busanga due to the increased presence of Lion, but on occasion still put in an appearance to show off their sleek, lithe physiques. An uncharacteristic male / female pairing obliged and allowed vehicles within a few metres, while they were feeding off a Wildebeest Calf. This is all very satisfying as Kafue National Park is the only park in Zambia to have resident Cheetah.
One of the guests' favourite activities is the sundowner or tea-stop at the Hippo pool, where they are amused by the frolicking, fighting and fooling of the Hippo while flocks of hundreds of openbilled Storks, Yellowbilled Storks, Whitefaced Ducks and myriads of Waders and waterbirds keep everybody's attention riveted. Once, you see a floating dead Hippo, which had been killed in a fight, attracting the attention of Crocodile, Lion and Vultures.
At one stage, the Crocodile have it all to themselves and one even manages to snap up an unfortunate Vulture that falls into the water. But the Lion are not to be balked of their prey and swim out to the carcass and drag it to shore, beating off Crocodile to perform this brave task.

Hippos graze only at night but if they have travelled a long way from their waterhole, they are sometimes caught out in the open in daylight. They prefer to eat short grass and noisily consume about 1-1.5% of their body weight every night.
